Marios Frangoulis sings in Cyprus.
Recently we went to see Cypriot tenor Marios Frangoulis at the Larnaca Patticheion Theatre. What a magical evening! He has the most amazing voice & he was expertly accompanied by the Ossipov Orchestra, whose conductor he obviously shares a huge mutual, professional respect with.
The setting in the Patticheion is divine although a little uncomfortable if you forget to take a cushion with you! To be honest when Marios sings any discomfort is forgotten and if you haven't yet been to one of his concerts I would urge you not to miss the next opportunity. The power & tone of his voice are truly great & we at DreamLives reckon that he should definitely rank right up there with Marcos Bagdhatis as Cyprus favourite young sons of this generation ...
So .. A big thank you to Marios Frangoulis & the Ossipov Orchestra ( & of course the Larnaca Patticheion Theatre) for a tremendous evening and for many more in the future. We are definitely your latest (in a long line of) Fans. |

Loss of Athalassa Lake
The popular picnic area at Athalassa has finally lost it's lake due to the increased risk of disease to local wild-life caused by previous droughts & the build up of toxins in the lake bed. During past years the lake has shrunk during drought periods but now the Ministry has had to take action to prevent further risk as the toxins build to a higher level. The lake is being drained & the lake bed will be ploughed over to break up the toxins. Local wild-life groups have expressed concern but as there is not enough water available to re-fill the lake this was the only course of action deemed feasible. It is hoped that the migratory & local wild-life previously using the lake will find sanctuary in the nearby Ayios Georgios lake instead.

Windmill farms granted license
The Government recently granted a license to two companies to build wind farms on Cyprus, one outside of Paphos & the second in the Larnaca District. Between them it is envisaged that the two farms will be able to generate enough power to supply 1600 villages annually & the power they generate will also go a long way towards meeting the needs of Cyprus as a new EU member state, in providing at least 6% of its energy needs via Renewable Energy Resources. The power generation regulations introduced by the EU also require that each country is able to generate 20% more power than the average annual expected demand & again the new wind farms will help to satisfy this requirement in Cyprus. It is also envisaged that it will help to reduce or at least stabilise the cost of electricity on the island as it breaks the monopoly previously held by the EAC.

It is estimated that with the islands’ recent EU accession, the way was paved for a possible 90,000 Northern Europeans to decide to buy property here providing that prices remain lower than neighbouring EU destinations and the standard of living remains stable.

UN Security Council Approves Plan to Cut Number of Troops on Peacekeeping Force
Due to the drop in incidents violating the ceasefire agreement, the UN Security Council has approved a plan to cut the UN Peace-keeping force in Cyprus from 1230 to 860. The force will retain its mandate to restore order and prevent a recurrence of fighting between the communities and the number of UN Military Police on the island will stay the same. Despite the overall drop in infringements of the ceasefire and the assertion that mobile units will be more effective on the ground than the current separate sectors who each have a rapid deployment unit at their disposal, there is local relief that the mandate to prevent resurgence of the fighting is unchanged, particularly after the discovery of two homemade bombs near the Ledra Palace check-point earlier this week. If the bombs had not been discovered and safely detonated, there could have been widespread damage and casualties in the area. The culprits have not been found as yet, but speculators agree it would appear that the bombs are part of an effort to increase tension between the communities. They were primed and ready for detonation, but placed in easliy spotted areas this time.
